Every March, I start hearing the same thing from business owners.
“I haven’t heard from my CPA since January.”
Before we go any further, let’s acknowledge something important. Tax season is intense. Good CPAs are working long hours, managing deadlines, filing returns, and trying to keep up with a flood of compliance work. For many firms, January through April is when a significant portion of their annual revenue is earned. This season is demanding, and most of them are simply trying to keep their heads above water.
They are not ignoring you. They are doing exactly what they were trained and structured to do.
The challenge is that while they are focused on last year, you are trying to run this year.
March is not a slow month for business owners. Trades companies are hiring for spring and preparing for their busiest season. Coaches are launching second-quarter programs. E-commerce brands are ordering inventory for summer. Service professionals are reviewing pricing to keep up with rising costs. These decisions require current, accurate numbers.
When your financials are sitting untouched since December, you are left making real-time decisions without real-time information. That is not just inconvenient. It creates uncertainty. You may be estimating payroll without confidence, guessing at margins, or hoping your estimated tax payment is close enough. Over time, that uncertainty turns into stress.
This is not a communication issue as much as it is a structural one.
CPAs are traditionally built around compliance. Their work centers on filings, deadlines, and historical accuracy. That work matters. A strong CPA is worth their weight in gold. But compliance and strategic financial leadership are not the same function.
The market has shifted. Business owners today want ongoing partnership. They want to understand their cash position, see where money is leaking, and make decisions with clarity instead of hesitation. They want someone looking at the numbers now, not just after the year has closed.
When we step into businesses during this season, the first priority is visibility. We build a cash runway plan so owners can clearly see how many weeks or months of operating expenses they have. We review expenses to identify patterns and leaks that are quietly eroding profit. We implement structured allocations so profit and taxes are planned for intentionally rather than discovered at the end of the year.
The emotional shift is noticeable. Owners move from feeling behind to feeling informed. Instead of waiting for April to pass, they begin planning for the rest of the year with confidence.
If you have felt ghosted since January, it does not mean you are bad at business. It also does not mean your CPA is failing you. It simply means your business may need more than seasonal compliance support.
Your company should not feel handcuffed to someone else’s busy season. It deserves year-round visibility.
